Pitchfork Consistency?
Here is a chart I made by averaging the ratings by PFM reviewers. It's by no means perfect. It doesnt include contributers that are not active. UPDATE: All averages are included except for the 6 reviewers who have the most. I've placed them within the chart solely based on the first 40 reviews that came up. Also, Sean Fennessey who recently wrote the 9.5 review for Kanye West's latest is not listed because he only has 3 prior reviews.
I was inspired by the consistency of Jason Crock's low reviews, and wondered what was up (he gave the Editors, The Cribs, and Youth Group all pretty poor reviews). Talk about a "Crock of Shit."
I'm also posting this incomplete list b/c Brooklyn Vegan just mentioned an article in the Times. The Times pieces states how 'precise' Pitchfork's system is: "Pitchfork steps up to the plate with a rigorous rating system, serious (if idiosyncratic) critical standards." (NY Times)
It may be more rigorous than most... but it's still quite arbitrary. Then again, maybe certain reviewers just have the consistent bad luck of listening to bad music. But then if Crock thinks everything's bad, then that should boost, not deflate those three album reviews.
Another thing to consider is the editorial staff approval of these ratings and reviews. Obviously with a high mark, more than a single dude or dudette will be conferring on that 9.5.
Something to think about... or just discard as this Yeti's stupidity.

i'm wondering if you could sort them by seniority. how long has a particular reviewer been around? i'm guessing the newer folks just get whatever random album reviews assigned to them, whereas the folks who've been around since the beginning probably have a lot more clout regarding what albums they review.
I'm sure that is a factor to some degree... that's why I included their positions at Pitchfork, and their # of reviews. Ryan Schreiber obviously will write about anything he pleases, so you'd expect that to be high.
But Abebe has an average of ofer 7.5 for 62 reviews, and Crock has 6.3 for 48.
pitchfork is like that person everyone hates but wants to be best friends with because you need his/her approval. no band is going to get it from jason crock, but that should be of little consequence considering he is the worst writer on that site (i do have respect for the others)
yep, those six or seven senior staff members are pretty spread out, but with more towards the high end of the spectrum.
it boggles me that some "contributors" has 20 reviews under their belt, while others have over 200. what does it take to get beyond just "contributor" i wonder...?
Why do people still take it really personally when Pitchfork gives bad reviews to records they like?
At least you shied away from using the dreaded "rockists" tag, which Brooklyn Vegan probably thinks is some sort of cutting-edge neologism.
I didn’t do these stats for PFM-bashing. How boring. This is just an analysis to break things down and maybe figure out how things work over there. And to be a little most aware of who is behind the writing.

two possible statistical flaws:
1) mark richardson actually has a ton more than 178 reviews. (he used to write as "mark richard-san", so if you just searched by "richardson", you missed about 300 reviews.)
2) I find it very interesting that you used only the first 40 or 80 reviews to make your averages---did you just assume that the first 40 reviews in the search engine would give you a random sample that would be "good enough"? or what? seems like it's a little misrepresentative of the folks with tons of reviews (richardson, schreiber, tangari) to assume that an average of 40 ratings will be representative of 300+ reviews.

i have been visiting the site since high school, about 5-6 years ago, when at first i thought they were the ultimate musical authority (yes, i was naive). but after seeing them grow over the years, i've realized what a crock of shit they are. a couple of things you newer PFM followers might not know:
-they went back and changed the ratings for certain reviews, months or years after the review was originally published (radiohead for example), in order to be more consistent with the current PFM dogma
-at one point they posted an ad that basically amounted to, "Hi, we at PFM are a bunch of unqualified whiteys that live in a bubble. we need a hip-hop writer, so apply if you are interested. then maybe we'll have more street cred!"
the only thing i use PFM for now is to expose myself to new bands that i might not have heard about otherwise. i ignore the ratings. PFM might know a thing or two about indie rock, but their coverage of
dance music, hip-hop, and music from the 1970s and before is laughable. not to mention that about a quarter of their reviews are just self-indulgent attempts at being clever, and don't even address the music itself.

Those aren't possible statistical flaws, they are definite flaws (except I didnt know the Richardson name change).
As much as I want to average 520 numbers for a single reviewer, I just haven't had the time- (yet). It may be misrepresentative for the 12 of the reviewers I didn't complete. I'd guess for those reviwers, they may be off by 0.300, which is indeed significant in comparison.

I'm not quite sure I understand why it is wrong to go back and change the scores of certain reviews. Take this 12 rods review for example.

Furthermore, does anyone know the specific details of how the scores are approved. Just curious.

As for the reference to a "rigorous rating scale" that is a completely vague comment. What does that even mean? I'm not a big fan of pointless PF bashing. They have their problems. But I do find the fact that their scale is based on how original the music is a bit bizarre. They focus on the wrong things sometimes. But oh well. Who doesn't?
Not to be too much of a statistical nerd, but how about a column that shows the standard deviation of each writer's reviews? An average doesn't tell you nearly enough unless you know the standard deviation as well.
And in case anybody doesn't know what the standard deviation does, it just shows you how spread out the reviews are from the average. So, if someone has an average review of 7 and a standard deviation of 1, that means that 95% of their reviews range from 5 - 9...meaning that they're probably a pretty good reviewer. Whereas if the standard deviation were 0.1, that would mean that 95% of their reviews ranged from 6.8 to 7.2...meaning a very biased reviewer. Obviously that makes a huge difference.
Just use the equation "stdev( )" in Excel.

melas, that's a good idea, except I only used excel to layout the data, not average it. I used my TI-83 for the number crunching. had I logged every single rating into it's own excel cell, it would have take me a week or more.
Pitchfork does change ratings on occasion. I know that they bumped Pedro The Lion's "It's Hard To Find A Friend" down after the record was re-released.
The reason I don't like Pitchfork much of the time is because they go past critiquing the music and start attacking the musicians personally, or they end up being really mean for the sake of sounding clever.
Plus, their research is often shoddy. For instance, in their review of "Up in Flames" by Manitoba, they say "And now, with his second full-length Up in Flames, he's chucked the laptop, dug the analog gear out of the dumpster, and recorded a 60s-worshiping indie pop record, complete with sun-kissed harmonies, layered acoustic guitars, Farfisa organ drones and glockenspiel." In actuality, according to an interview with Dan Snaith, the record was recorded almost entirely with a crappy PC desktop. So much for "digging the analog gear out of the dumpster."
These mistakes are made all of the time. They are especially apparent when you read reviews of your friend's records and almost every fact/assumption made in the review is incorrect.
Their news section is handy for finding out stuff, though. Just not a fan of the majority of their reviews/reviewing style.
I was seeing what was up with Jason Crock. He gave our last album (contact kid) a pretty crappy rating.
Naturally I was pissed seeing as most other sites and magazines gave it at least a fair if not glowing review.
The thing that got me most was the actual writing which seemed to be more of a general rant then a review of the album.
I learned a lesson on trying to find a freelance writer who writes for pitchfork rather than relying on their stable of regulars (most of all jason crockofshit who apparently never graduated basic English and doesn't like much of anything he reviews).

I think the elephant in the room is the fact that Pitchfork is already over. It's at the point of doing more harm than good. I've had my fill of snarky reviews. I've had my fill of cruel and unusual. It seems to slip the minds of the PFM reviewers that most of the albums that they review are the result of a long and arduous process of writing, practicing, and recording. For what it's worth, I wouldn't treat my enemies to the kind of bludgeoning that Pitchfork reviewers regularly issue. People who are sincerely putting in an effort don't deserve that treatment, especially at the hands of these douchebag-ass wordsmithing scientologists!
My point is BOYCOTT PITCHFORK! Don't give them your time! Don't give them your traffic! Don't go to their festival! Don't send your CD's to be reviewed by them!
On the whole I like Pitchfork when it raises my awareness of a band getting hype on the net. But...
They have such an inbuilt bias that it is untrue. For instance, they love The Pipettes, who dress up in 50's polka-dot fashion and who borrow HEAVILY from that era's music.I like them.
But they HATE with a passion Amy Winehouse, who borrows from soul classics but updates them with much more forward looking lyrics and mixtures of styles.
They simply fail to listen to the music sometimes. Also, the more they know about some = lower marks.
