A Brief Smile (Take Notes)

One of the most interesting bands to watch perform recently has been a young local band A Brief Smile. The most remarkable thing about them is simply how much they seem to enjoy playing.

When he's not singing, DL Tashjian threshes about on the guitar, while Louie pounds the skins and backs him up with vocals. In addition, Jared couldn’t contain himself behind the keyboard. It’s hard to put into words, but he was all over the place in that corner.

John, the bass player, contrasted all this excitement by doing just the opposite. He reminded me of the tuba player in Concert Band that learns to play bass for the Jazz Ensemble… as if he was just recruited last week. That’s not to say he wasn’t good. He was, and he somehow fit in perfectly with what the others were doing. The only person I couldn’t characterize was the other guitarist, Garrett: lost to the dark spot at Pianos.

In a nutshell, if you’re in a band, check out what these guys do on stage. Then steal it. They play at Fat Baby on January 25th.

Oh… and the music? Darn good. Especially these two:

We Could Get In Trouble (mp3)
And So It Begins (mp3)

It's really grat to see a posting about these guys. I've seen them a bunch of times around the city, and they are always perfect. Great tunes, great energy. Can't wait to see what this band does in the future.
