Richard Hawley

Richard Hawley – I Sleep Alone (mp3)
Richard Hawley – Darlin’ (Live) (mp3)

“How the hell did I miss ____’s album last year?” The latest to fill that –blank- is Richard Hawley and his remarkable album Cole’s Corner. I didn’t even know of it until last week. Richard Hawley is on a very short tour of the US, concluding Thursday at Sine, and it’s sold out. If you’re unfamiliar of his music, he is a categorical “crooner,” part Roy Orbison, part Johnny Cash, part Leonard Cohen. If you're familiar with his music, then you know he's more than that. And now he's a new favorite of mine.

-Del of Totes Probs Maybs is a fan and caught him at SxSW.
-The album was #17 on Todd Burn’s Favorites of last year.
-Bill P Soundbites has it in his favorite of 2005 also.

I saw him down at SXSW and we was awesome. I wish I had known he was playing Sin-e before it sold out. Oh well.

i was a little dissappointed about the SXSW show, but I think that mostly to do with the fact I didnt feel like watching anyone perform before Morrissey. I just wanted richard to get it all over with so I could see Moz.

also some of songs sounded very similar. going to check out the mp3s now though and give it another shot :)

Richard's ace, a Sheffield institution. Check his older albums too, Lowedges (like Coles Corner, a place in Sheff) & Late Night Final. He's kind of a traditional northern working men's club crooner & a brilliant guitarist too. It's great he's getting the exposure he deserves at last.

The Richard Hawley show last night was fantastic. More about it over my way.
