Norah Jones Secret Show; Not Punk
“So how did you find out about the show?” It was a question thrown out Friday night by an overprotective fan who had been harassing Amrit during Norah Jones’s secret set at the Delancey.
“I was here for the opening band, Pela.” I answered.
And with that excuse –a true one- I may even maintain what little indie-cred I purport to have. The truth of the matter is, had I known Norah Jones would be performing a secret show -with what was rumoured to be (for at least an hour) a punk band- I don’t think I would have missed it.
Norah Jones? Blah.
Random punk band? Blah.
Norah Jones in a punk band? Fuck yeah.
Unfortuntely, despite the get-up making them appear like anime-punk, there wasn’t a trace of edge in the songs. However you dress her up, Norah is still Norah.
Well, maybe. One lyric went something like, “suck his weiner.” Very edgey.
In a weird joke-band sort of way, it was wonderfully terrible; but it also depends on who you ask. A few bloggers accidentally in attendance admitted they loved it. To me, the songs were rather pointless; safely familiar with rhymes painfully obvious. Norah herself cast her eyes downward and even though she played guitar confidently, was still a bit detached. The dedication and lunacy of the fan next to us, the one who kept harassing Amrit, was admirable. He claimed, "Well maybe she doesn't want you to write about her. Did you ever think of that? Maybe she doesn't want publicity "
Too bad, Norah. We’re on to you now. You should have picked an opening band that didn’t have any buzz.
“So how were they, this Pela?” the loony NoJo fan asked, becoming suddenly and suspiciously friendly.
“Not bad. Not bad at all. They have a huge sound. Very anthemic.”
“And cooler fans,” I thought as I walked away.
[Ed. note: By 'cooler' I don't mean that any group of people could actually be 'cooler' than another. He had attacked us too many times to suddenly make nice. No punches were thrown, though, and everyone went home safely.]

ok w/ that last comment, and cooler fans, u effectivly portrait urself as the typical jack black high fidelity asshole music snob. get over urself, ur over 25 eh?! almost pushing thirty?! listen to something more maturing than artic monkeys or forward russia. for fuck skaes u got ever single current buzz band on ur listening to list; but that makes u cool? get over urself. norah jones is terrific, end of story. the guy was excited, oh coursehe was excited, she played a show in the basement bar at delancy instead of MSG, u werent excited when Arctic Monkeys played mercury? or wait did u jump on that band wagon too late to see them there! so just bc he was interested in what Pela sounded like doesnt give u reason to jump on him and poke fun at him behind his back, u silly bloggers make me sick.
^ that guy speaks the truth...pfft...land of talk (land of buzz), islands, cold warkids, sunset rubdown, forward russa, beirut, think aboutlife...i guess since they have 11 fans(all bloggers) they are just amazing...just wait till they play bowery or the dreaded webster then you wont be naming them as your "favorite" bands...i mean once they hit mercury they are already becoming unhip...but you def are cooler than your fans, and by naming buzz bands who you wont like next month makes you cooler, trust me i know these types of things, you are the fucking man :)
norah jones has a beautiful voice - no doubt. this came across that night, but i agree with jerry. i actually didn't think that it worked at all and couldn't work out if it was a joke or serious. which makes me wonder what the point was. still it was cool to see her - and well, everyone has their opinion....
pela on the other hand were great.
Col, you are entitled to your opinion, as is jerry; however, you can, and still, are wrong.
honestly its soo cheesey(by the way string cheese incident and ratdog tour!!!!) for jerry(who disgraces the name) to not like this norah jones show...how could he possibly be hip and like something...yet i heard on the DL that jerry isnt really that hip after all in fact he is packing a couple of extra pounds...now you know as well as i do that is not hip!!!!!
Dude I read this site on the regular. Jerry champions great music all the time. If in fact he doesn't like something, there's probably good reason. Here he has articulated his position fair and well. So just relax and go back to your easy listening stations, anons.
attention eddie: i got a nice big ___ for you why dont you cool off your tongue and prepare for intake.
What's all this nonsense...you Norah Jones fans cant be serious? If you're gonna go balls to the wall for an artist, make sure it's someone halfway cool or was once cool..not a singer that my 65 year old grandma thinks is groovey...and listen here, and listen good, the Yeti is the daddy, and Sunset Rubdown is the daddy, and Beirut is the daddy and Norah Jones should stick to selling music at starbucks or the supermarket b/c in Foley's world that shit aint charted. Fuck all you ho's get a grip.
dork fight dork fight!
amazing.
I don't know which side is nerdier.
man jerry, they are being bitches tonight.
Hey Anon(s)! Come and get one in the yarbles - if you've got any yarbles! www.fistswithyourtoes.blogs.com
by the way, it's helpful to see a show to have an opinion of it....
I like Norah and Beirut. Now I can't have any friends.
Whoa, my computer crashes for a day and look what happens.
This guy that Jerry's speaking of just would not leave us alone. He claimed to be a super fan and began throwing out hypothetical ethics-of-journalism questions throughout the set. (This wasn't a camera issue; he was taking pics too.) As soon as he got whiff of the fact that we weren't casual fans, he began a set-long assault, marring what was otherwise a great night.
Armed with those facts, read Jerry's post again. And relax.
Ok let me get this straight.
Not liking a band makes you a loser.
And making anonymous posts ripping someone for his OPINION makes you 'hip'.
Y'all really need to consider your logic. 'Take Off Your Cool' while you're at it.
'Rit you should roughed that overzealous cat up. Then you would have been unquestionably edgey.
geez, bitter people coming to another person's blog to shout out cheap insults anonymously is so lame.
there is a little X in the corner of your browser. if you don't like what you're reading just push that and go away.
I didn't see the show, either, so I'm obviously entitled to my opinion, too!
I can only conclude, from these comments, that Norah Jones fans enjoy proving other peoples' points for them.
Which is just plain rude!
Or, in the words of the word verifier, "Hzekbx!"
did my bookmarks screw up? is this ultragrrl?
i wasn't there. and i haven't heard it yet, but it's great!!
this thread proves the point that when midtown meets downtown opinions differ! Shocking!
i go out and this is what happens, talking about blasting people for their opinions!
norah jones = boring
norah jones + punk = boring
jerry = awesome
Anonymous NYC hipsters being assholes = boring
the El Madmo album will/is be great.
jerry is a good guy. i like norah jones, i hate anon commentors that act like punks. they're like jaded dudes living in their mom's basement apartments using the internet at the public library.
we Crackers will be at the Delancey tomorrow nite if any anons wanna roll.
or they are university students that dont live off their parents but instead take out loans and work 2 jobs, but ok.
hey however you pay your bills you're still trying to diss people anonymously which is just kinda weak, you know?
Wes, I hear you, but I dont blog, and it's a hassale to post otherwise. Plus, I did not intend on dissing Jerry, as much as I intended on pointing out the flaw in his post. I enjoy Pela just as much as the next guy but in the post's context it seemed to me atleast that Jerry was attacking Norah Jones (and her apparent shitty music) and her fans, which is wrong.
Pela = great!
Madmo = interesting!?!
Sorry anonymous--it's really not credible to say you weren't trying to diss Jerry by saying he portrays himself as an asshole music snob and all that. Not being hostile/ad hominem is a great goal, but you've got to watch what you say more carefully for it to be credible. (Ad hominem attacks when disagreeing with someone are a big pet peeve of mine--they're not relevant or polite, and they discourage actual discussion of the issue at hand.)
So, Anonymous, could you please clarify how this comment of yours was "pointing out a flaw in Jerry's post" and NOT your attempt at "dissing Jerry":
"yet i heard on the DL that jerry isnt really that hip after all in fact he is packing a couple of extra pounds...now you know as well as i do that is not hip!!!!!"
I held off on commenting on this because I didn't want to air Jerry's personal dirty laundry, but the truth about Mr. Anonymous is he's angry because Jerry took his mother, Dorothy Anonymous out for a nice seafood dinner and never called her again!
Shame on you, Jerry.
