Second Thoughts About Life, Art Brut

Knitting Factory Tap Bar, Midnight following Think About Life. Keith of We Are Scientists and Eddie Argos watched their set as well.

Jerry: Keith. What’s the deal? I totally missed your set. You were supposed to go on at 11:30, like last night.
Keith: Oh no. I’m so sorry. I thought so too. I almost missed our set. I'm really sorry about that.
Jerry: Well at least these guys were great.
Keith: Yeah, they were awesome. Have you ever heard them before?
Jerry: I actually have their album.
Keith: Really? I was just about to go buy it.
Jerry: It’s a little rough around the edges, but… that’s kind of what’s great.

Indeed. While I may have been the first to post the W.A.S. opening for Art But, I managed to fail to see the trio entirely. Knitting Factory moved the set times up an hour, and TAL's set up two. I was fairly pissed off (not exactly sure at who), but Think About Life were indeed a saving grace. They exist in some odd realm of sound comprised of naked -and dissonant- casiotone, karaoke, and a lot of snare on the kit. And it works, somehow. As witnessed by various comments on many other blogs, not everyone will like it, and it probably won't change you life. But who cares when we're having this much fun? Heartonastick was one of the few who saw them the night before, and it sounds like it was an even better time. J, like Keith, also bought the album.

Art Brut is still Art Brut. The last 30 seconds of Emily Kane is always where it's at.

Funny, last night I thought WAS was lacking a little in energy (Keith seemed a bit tired) but Art Brut were ten times insanity.

I'm glad TAL were good; I wished I could have given them a second chance but there was no way I was gonna make it down to the Tap Bar and back up to the Main Room in that crowd.

And how apropros: somebody under the name of Emily Kane is playing Pianos on June 7th.

I like how Think About Life gets the crowd involved, ie. by grabbing us and pulling us to the stage and throwing around construction cones. The crowd didn't know what to do, we were all like wtf, why is this guy grabbing me and pulling me around? NYC needs something like that every once and a while to keep us from standing there with our arms folded. I was on edge the rest of the show! Hope they come back soon. Hopefully I'll have some pics up on Monday.

you couldn't take your eyes off TAL's lead singer...otherwise you might get clocked. i thought they were great. usually i'm a bit uptight with that kind of thing, but i just set down my beer and braced myself.

the downstairs was where it was at. keith totp's ramshackle show wasn't so good, but the last song was an Art Goblins reunion. They did some song where the last three minutes was just Eddie screaming "Nicky Wire can suck my cock." There were maybe 30 people watching this... and even less knew who Nicky Wire was. As it should be.

I don't know, the upstairs show was pretty great, too. Eddie Argos stagediving, crowdsurfing, losing his belt, AND having a random fan touch his "bum"? I wanna know who pinched his PEZ belt off of him; that's robbery.

ok...downstairs was where it was at when upstairs wasn't. the chalets were pretty entertaining.

it was a great night all around. i like the band-currated evening idea a lot. much more of a party vibe.

Wow I had no idea how many bloggers were down there! Thanks for coming you guys. Art Brut, WAS, & Robocop Kraus were all super supportive.

Yeah TAL are suited for low stages, or middle of the floor. Here's a video from their Montreal launch (sold out) and you can see the kind of energy they (and me!) were trying to bring America.

Next time they come round, i'd like to set them up with loft shows/parties instead of a bar/venue, so if anyone is interest pls do hit me up!
