State of the Year in Songs Part IV
The best of the best! Without repeating an artist, my favorite songs I’ve listened to in 2006, Part IV. [Part I, II, and III previously]. I'll keep the talk short, since Part V is almost complete. Let me just say this was a stupendous month in music.
1.The Starlight Mints – Seventeen Devils
Previous Post
This song is so amazing, it's a wonder why there isn't more craze about them. Sure this is their third album and they lack the "new buzz band" buzz, but this song is the smuggler's dope.
2. The Little Ones – Cha Cha Cha
Previous Post
So happy and fun, I once posted it three times in a row. Possibly on it's way to be #1 song of the year. "And yet it's #2 this month?" Don't ask.
3. My Latest Novel - The Reputation of Ross Francis (mp3)
I love how the Scottish accents come through and harmonize. The syncopated sticcato chorus adds a certain punch which works nicely. (I'm a sucker for syncopated sticcato rhythms).
4. Cansei De Ser Sexy – Alala
Previous Post
This song reminds me Smoosh, but older, dancier, and dirtier. (Is that wrong of me?) I mean they sing, "...Superfine / Alala Alala / You're so cool / Can I be you're friend / I'll drive you to the end."
5. The Stills – Oh Shoplifter
Hand-clap happy song of the month? Yes. Simple, catchy, and addictive.
6. Pela – The Trouble with River Cities (mp3)
Why the internet isn't blowing up over this is another mystery. I haven't mentioned Pela much, but that'll change. Listen to this song and tell me otherwise; remarkable.
7. Birdmonster – Balcony
I can't wait to see these guys in July and scream out the lyrics during the chorus. "From the Balcony! she said! she said! 'I'm not yours! my friend! I'm not yours but I'm everything!'" Yesssss. Can't wait.
8. Gomez – Hamoa Beach (mp3)
Previous Post
Forgotten Gomez? Come back with this song.
9. The Whigs – Violent Furs (mp3)
I've never mentioned the Whigs, but I think Rolling Stone did, so that scared me away. Still, this song kills me with it's upbeatness. Check out the Whigs if you haven't, and begin here.
10.Bonde Do Role – Melo Do Vitiligo

Dance beats? Check! Illegal AC/DC Samples? Check! Indecipherable foreign language? Check! Get on the dance floor already!

My favorite Birdmonster, "Balcony" lyric is: "What do you want me to do, to pull you from the nasty side of life." It's so raw.
Oh man I listen to that Pela song at least twice a day. So good.
Listen to Pela's All in Time. That song is simply gorgeous.
seriously where is all the love for Pela? come on, people!
Ah, nice. Just bought The Little Ones album... Pela, huh? I'll have to give that one a listen as well.
I'll chime in too on that Pela song; so nice I had to hear it twice. Hit me right in the sweet spot... The other highlight for me was "Cha Cha Cha" right at the 3:20 mark when it Peaks Big Time. (I think that's when I want you to throw the tape player into the tub.)
Beautiful Stills song. Harmonies, handclaps. Kind of Simon/Garfunkle(sp). Very nice. Nice guitar note selection at the end. Thanks for sharing!
i too just bought the little ones sing song ep. amazing! i cant wait for the full length....thanks yeti
I'm a massive fan of Gomez. 'Chasing Ghosts with Alcohol' has to be my fav this year.
