The Kooks, Helios, Lily Allen
I'm losing my edge. The Kooks [website / myspace] didn't even come on my radar until this morning when I saw that Laura Modernage called them bigger that the Beatles in Rachael Underrated's new article for Burning Man Radio [warning: embedded audio]. Also notice that I'm named dropped in that article. My current band of choice is Helios [website, myspace] who've I've managed to never write about until this very second.
Anyway, according to the BeeV, the Kooks sold out N6 and have booked a gig at Bowery for $10. Tix on sale at noon. I'm trying to make up my mind by then. This song is pretty ace:

I'm calling Hype on these guys. The most telling thing about them are the artists listed as "influences" on their myspace:
"Police, Jack Johnson,The Kinks, The Beatles, funkadelic parliament, neil young, dylan, mason jennings, free, velvet underground, bowie, lou reed, john butler trio, john martyn, nick drake, the doors, the smiths, rolling stones, stone roses, jeff buckley."
It's like after they hit their most obvious influence -- JACK JOHNSON (what, no Maroon 5?) -- they started asking friends for names of "cool" acts.
P-funk? Give me a break.
The Helios track's nice.
These guys are alright but seem straight from the La's/Shack/Cast school of britpop, with a little bit of Doherty in there too. "Eddie's Gun" and "Sofa Song" are worth listening to but they're about as important as Athlete.

The Kooks are huge in England, their album has been in the top 5 for months. I caught them before the hype but can't really stand them anymore - their lead singer Luke is an arsehole.
They met at a stage school so the slightly manufactured and well-polished sound is no coincidence.
To be fair though, they do make good music. Even if they are rubbish live.
john h: you haven't seen them life... they're like one of the best bands live around. I've also known them far before the hype, but i still like them cuz i like their music.
