Top Ten

People have been complaining about my Favorite albums of the year post all weekend. Some to my face, some behind my back. But those were only my “Favorite” albums. Here are my “Top Ten” albums for social and peer approval. I don’t think there’s any room for debate here.

1. TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
If your Top-Ten list doesn’t have TVotR as #1, that’s just dumb. No one will pay attention to the rest on the list if you don’t. There’s really no use fighting it.

2. LCD Soundsystem - 45:33
Yeah it’s only one track, but hey it’s freaking LSD Soundscan. If you learn anything from this genre it’s that longer is better. Nothing beats the longest song of the year. [except of course for TVotR]. Which also brings us to:

3. Joanna Newsom – Ys
Five songs all over 7 minutes on harp with odd rhythm and melodies = best of year. I had this on my Top Ten when I first got the press release saying it was only five tracks and nearly an hour long. In essence, it’s 56 minutes of recitative without aria. Just the other day I was on the J train when I heard someone quietly humming “Only Skin" and I chimed in in harmony. Who hasn’t had that stuck in their head this year?

4. The Knife – Silent Shout
Spooky Swedish electropop. Boo! They play behind a scrim. Yeah, that’s right: a scrim!!! With video projections and lights and ballons and and and... ooooo... ahhhhh.

5. Grizzly Bear – Yellow House
I tried to be critical once, but my commentors really changed my mind. So here it is.

6. Destroyer - Destroyer’s Rubies
Why didn’t this get a 10.0? This deserves a 10.0. Rumor has it that speculation over at the ILM board caused Mr. Bejar the coveted score of perfection from PFM. In my heart of hearts, I still give it one – and by default the other five albums above this one too.

7. Liars – Drums Not Dead
Have you seen the DVD for this? The one where the snail crawls along for the entire album? If you haven’t you may not understand why this album is so weird and weird = best of year. 9.9 [minus 0.1 for the other two DVD movies that aren’t as spacey.]

8. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver
It doesn’t come out until March 2007, but it’s already the best of this year and next. C’mon, it’s freaking LDS Tabernaclesystem.

9. Thom Yorke – The Eraser
This is the guy in Radiohead.

10. Silversun Pickups – Carnavas
I don’t get this band at all. But others seem to. That’s why it’s #10.

Ha. You need to create ten separate lists where each of these albums is number one. Any less than that, and your elbo.ws login screen will redirect you to Creed's homepage.

I need to get that Liars album. And Silversun Pickups doesn't deserve a top 10.

Nicely played and so true! I am currently working on my top 60 and it will not include Ys or Cookie Mountain. You go Yeti!

Your # 1 is so right. TVOTR has the best sound this year and pretty much deserve number one on everyones list.

Aren't you breaking some kind of rule by having two Tabernaclesystems on one list? Either way, groovin'.

Pretty funny. Wait ... are some people taking this seriously? That's even better.

But, you lose points for actually liking The Hold Steady, which is the #1 "I like this because it makes me cool" album of the year.

nice.

you forgot the part where CYHSY's next record will be the worst record of 2007 as a matter of principle

Putting aside your horrible list, it sounds like two of your choices aren't even your favorites, but stuff that other people have talked you into. Dude, grow some balls!

Hasan gets an A++++ for reading comprehension.

I'm just wondering why there is no Danielson - Ships on any lists? Am I the only one who thought this was a masterpiece?

Danielson is on my top ten that i haven't posted yet. by the way, yeti, i was at a party yesterday, talking about albums with this guy and he totally quoted your list (he gave you credit).

Screw 'peer approval'.
It's a lot like corporate or critical approval.
There is no need to try and look for approval when it comes to taste. Your best album list is fine because it is your list.
If you try to please everyone then your list would include at least 2000 albums.

Okay, this is frighteningly similar to Pitchfork's top 10.
